SEED PRODUCTION

Course ID: PRO-SE>SEEDPROD
Course title: SEED PRODUCTION
Semester: 4 / Spring
ECTS: 4
Lectures/Classes: 15 / 30 hours
Field of study: Agriculture
Study cycle: 1st cycle
Type of course: compulsory
Prerequisites:
Contact person: dr hab. inż. Sylwia Lewandowska sylwia.lewandowska@upwr.edu.pl
Short description: During the course the student will learn about issues related to seed production and legal regulations in Poland and in the European Union. After the course the student will be able to work in a breeding and seed company or in accredited biochemical laboratories in the whole Europe.
Full description: Modern seed production cannot exist without high quality seed. New varieties are a cheap source of production causing the increase of crop yields without any danger to environment. Seed Production, as a science, is responsible for developing of methods to obtain seeds with the highest quality parameters, such as germination, health, and above all, the field's ability to emergence. During the course the student will learn about plant breeding, seed production and biological progress; formation, structure and types of seeds and seedlings; seed maturation; field qualification of seed material; seed reproduction; laboratory control of seed material; seed categories according to the European Union requirements; seed germination; types of seedlings; assessed of seedling morphology; vigor of seeds; improving of seed material; aging process of seeds; dormancy of seeds; seed storage, biochemical methods; pathogens and pests in stored seed mass; elements of biotechnology of genetic engineering in seed production; legal regulations; the Seed Act; organization and functioning of the seed industry in Poland and in the world; legal regulations regarding registration, ownership of varieties and reproduction of seed material. The acquired knowledge will allow the student in the future to take up an attractive job on the European market in breeding and seed companies.

Learning outcomes: The student has basic knowledge and techniques in range of plant breeding methods and seed production of agricultural and horticultural crops. A student understands the differences between seed production of conventional and organic farming system. A member of the course knows the differences in seeds structures, understands aging processes of seeds and knows methods of seeds reproduction. A student is able to acquire and properly interpret information from literature and other sources about seed production, understands the differences between the production of seed material in a conventional and ecological system, can recognize the seeds of various crops. The student is able to interpret the benefits resulting from the use of certified seed material, understands the difficulties occurring during the seed production process, understands the aim of improving seed material, can interpret ISTA regulations. The participant of the course knows and respects the rules applicable in the seed assessment laboratory. A student understands the necessity of cooperation in a student’s group in order to distinguish seed material of different crops. A student understands the economic problems connected with the higher price of certified seed material. A student understands the need to take care of the quality and condition of the laboratory equipment and understands the principles of safety work in the seed assessment laboratory, has an awareness of responsibility for the state of the environment and biodiversity of cultivated crops.
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: - activity during tutorials, oral discussion - a test during tutorials - knowledge of legal regulations in the EU in terms of seed production - individual work and in groups during lectures and tutorials - class participation - oral presentation about seed production (pointed task) - individual work
